News came this week confirming the death of Private George William
Connolly, of the Marines, who was reported severely wounded on June 6, 1918. Brigadier General Long, of Red Cross Headquarters, Washington, telegraphed that absolute confirmation had been received from Paris that he was killed the day he was reported wounded. Five Marines now in the hospital at Brooklyn Navy Yard said they fought near Connolly on the day he was killed and saw him fall. He was removed and placed in an ambulance which was headed to the rear when it was successfully shelled by the Huns until all its occupants were killed. The same boys also told what was not known heretofore that Connolly was awarded the Croix de Guerre in May 1918, for gallantry. The soldier's younger brother Charles was also decorated for bravery.
